One of the biggest questions I get asked on a regular basis is how to make your own healthy homemade dog food. “I have my personal chef make it!” I always never respond. In fact I always say, I should do a blog post about it. So today is your lucky day!

Over the years, Soda has tried and tested lots of diets – from the grocery store offerings, to boutique packaged meals and more recently to a mix of the home made variety.

Today, I’m sharing with you one of my most favourite and simple recipes – possibly because it only has 5 steps! Including some of our favourite superfoods for dogs It can be made and frozen in batches to ensure your dog is never without a fresh meal.

4. Stir in the quinoa to the chicken and vegetables then remove from heat.

A NOTE ABOUT SUPPLEMENTS

When cooking your dog’s food at home it is always important that you include a nutritionally sound supplement in their diet.

To enjoy good health, dogs require a high level of quality protein in their diet, along with a balanced level of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and animo acids.

Back in the day, this meant trawling stores for bone meal, flaxseed oil, green lipped mussel and other hard to find ingredients. Luckily nowadays a number of dog food supplements do all the hard work for you.

One of our favourite brands include:

Wellbeing for Dogs – Wellbeing Essentials Mix

It’s important when cooking your own homemade dog food that you consult with your vet prior to any dietary changes, and include a high quality dog food supplement. Bon Appétit!

Awesome, yumm! I’m wondering how you prepare your kale? My dog won’t touch it raw so I’ve tried baking it with a bit of oil. He eats that but I’d prefer not to have that oil in his diet. Do you boil it?

Hi Mary, I either chop it up and add to a stir fry mix like the above, or I lightly steam it to retain the nutrients. Hope this helps!

Is this a veterinarian – approved or veterinary nutritionist – approved recipe?

      Hi Emily,
The recipe is based on veterinary guidelines provided for home cooked dog food – and all of the ingredients are veterinary approved.
However as noted in the post, it’s important to include a canine supplement and consult your own vet before introducing your dog to any dietary changes so they can ensure it is suitable for your dog’s specific needs.
      🙂
