Laser focused on the shadow above. An easy target.The hunter flexes her powerful tail, torpedoing herself at 25 mph toward the surface.Her black eyes go white. Her jaws open wide. The kill is nigh...The hunter snatches the prey in her jaws for only a fraction of a second before spitting it back into the ocean. Something isn't right.She doesn't know what it is, but it isn't the calorie-rich seal she expected.It isn't useful to her. She discards it and goes on about her business, looking for that next meal.Meanwhile, the boat full of humans are high fiving each other and cheering. The large great white shark breached out of the water and they got it on film. They will now reset the seal decoy and try again.We can learn so much from sharks. In this example of a great white shark breaching the water, it takes less than a second for her to realize the seal decoy isn't a meal. (In South Africa, they also accidentally breach on penguins as well with the same reaction. Apparently they don't enjoy eating these penguins. Phew.)Yes, she put a bunch of energy into attacking the prey. I daresay she was even excited about the prospect of the meal. But in the end, it just wasn't what she needed or wanted...and perhaps even something that would be bad for her, so she got rid of it. In the span of a couple seconds!!We, as humans, often take a lot longer to realize that what we want isn't really what we want.The rush of buying a fancy car wears off after a few weeks, now we're stuck with a huge car payment every month.We have boxes and boxes of stuff we just can't get rid of for whatever reason, so they take up space in our basem*nts, garages, or heaven forbid storage units.The list of clutter we allow ourselves to be burdened by goes on...and on.We don't quite realize what a burden all these things are until it becomes to late.
